Turkey Felt Mug Rug

Let’s make a Mug Rug!

Creating a Turkey Felt Mug Rug is a great way to add some festive Thanksgiving flair to your fall decor. These fun pieces also make for an adorable handmade gift idea. supplies needed for your mug rug:

  • Felt- (1) 9″ x 12″ background sheet( I used sandstone)
  • Felt (small pieces)- brown, red,gold/yellow, white, black, (4)colors for feathers (2 per color)(orange, green, purple, pink)
  • Embroidery floss-colors of your choice
  • Needle-big eye, sharp needle
  • Fabric scissors
  • Printed template
  • Paper scissors
  • Pins

step-by-step instructions to make your own turkey mug rug:

  1. Print the turkey parts template, and cut out all of the pieces for the mug rug pattern.

2. Take your background felt sheet and fold it in half so that you have (2) 6″ x 9″ pieces. You will sew your turkey design onto one piece, and then you will attach the back piece at the end.

3. Place your turkey body on the brown felt, pin it into place, and cut the shape out. Repeat with the outer eye(white), inner eye (black), wattle (red) beak (yellow), and the (8) feathers (your color choice).

4. Place the feathers on the front felt piece and pin them into place, making sure the turkey body covers any holes/gaps.

5. Thread your needle with (3)strands of embroidery floss, and tie a knot at the end. Hide your knot on the back of the felt and using a running stitch attach all of the feathers to the felt.

6. Repeat with the turkey body, beak, wattle, and eyes using coordinating thread colors.(you can always glue these pieces on with fabric glue if you don’t want to sew)

7. Now that all of the turkey pieces are attached, you can sew the backing felt on using the blanket stitch.
